The Science of Selection
In e-commerce, colors aren’t just about aesthetics; they are functional tools. The right palette can reduce anxiety, build trust, and create urgency where you need it most.
The 60-30-10 Rule for E-commerce
When applying color to your Shopify landing page, follow this ratio to maintain visual hierarchy:
- 60% Dominant (Neutral): Large background surfaces. This should provide enough white space to let your products breathe.
- 30% Secondary (Brand): Used for section backgrounds, borders, and secondary text. This reinforces your brand identity.
- 10% Accent (Action): Reserved EXCLUSIVELY for your primary Call-to-Action (CTA) buttons like “Add to Cart” or “Buy Now.”
High Contrast for “Buy” Buttons
The “Add to Cart” button should be the most visually distinct element on the page. It doesn’t necessarily have to be red or green—it just needs to have high contrast against the rest of your site.
Trust Colors
- Blue: Conveys reliability and security (used often by fintech and high-end electronics).
- Green: Associated with health, nature, and growth (perfect for organic supplements or sustainable fashion).
- Black/White: Represents luxury, sophistication, and minimalism.
